2009 Holiday CD

Hey,

So, here are some of the songs that have gone out on my music newsletters over the past year.

Enjoy,

PLAYLIST THEORY:

Shimmy Shimmy Ya – El Michels Affair
Yes, you’ve heard the beat before…ahhhhh..there you go!!

High on the Heels – The Whitest Boy Alive
Ok, I’m really hoping to hook the listener into the CD with this track.  My biggest fear with mixtapes is that it’ll get boring.  I don’t want a parsley track.  I want the entire meal to be tasty.

Islands – The xx
I played this for two girls I was dating – one of them didn’t like it.  My girlfriend did.

Can We Call it Love – Soundspecies
It would be physically impossible to not want a martini right now.

Breakadawn – Tanya Morgan
Who would’ve thought, the most exciting producer since J Dilla would be a white guy.  Job well done, Mick Boogie – great tribute to De La Soul.

I Have a Vision (Fred Falke Remix) – Roy Davis Jr > Erin Martin
I must warn you, when you hear the chorus come in (and you’ll hear it coming in), it’s going to be an enjoyable moment.  Then, when you hear her say, “This is your wake up…..this is automatic…I have a vision….” and then go back to “This is automatic…I have a vision…” you’re going to have a lustful moment.  No photo needed.

Strangers in the Wind – Cut Copy
I can’t think of a band that makes better music than Cut Copy.  They’re the perfectly produced indie band.  Fuck, I wouldn’t mind Australia, but I don’t think I’d sacrifice hip hop for surf.

Even After All Dub – Finley Quyaye
Michigan legalized marijuana for medicinal use; if only their automotive engineering was as progressive...

The Dark – The Woods
This song reminds me of the all the K.O.A. campgrounds I’ve ever camped in.  It reminds me of scalding hot showers and frostbitten atmosphere, matching sweats and damp towels drying on damp rainflies…and a shitload of crickets.

Blood – The Middle East
The last time I heard a song as triumphant as this was when I heard Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up.”

All or Nothing – Au Revoire Simone
As much as I like this song, I wouldn’t play it in front of my hood friends!  Hahahaha!

Fresh Like Us – Chiddy Bang
I figure that last song made you sleepy.  Let’s pick it up with some Hipster Hop.  It’s not classic, but it’s undeniable.  Wait till you hear the hook.

LA Famous – Idle Warship
I like how Kweli evolves with his music.  You have to stay fresh.  Wow, is electro is changing the game of independent music.  Even Bon Iver couldn’t refrain.

Whachadoin? – N.A.S.A > Spank Rock, MIA, Santogold, Nick Zinner
I’d pay to see girls dance to this.  Maybe Mario Lopez, also.

Animal (Pumps Jump Up Remix) – Miike Snow
An example of where I heard the remix before the album version.  Made me hate not just the album version, but the entire album.

Tiiiired – Shout Out Out Out Out
Bands like this know how to utilize the available, digital resources in a way that will push music forward.  I felt like this properly wrapped up the entire mixtape.

Thank you's to:  Roy Mananquil, Ben Eckerson, Jon Moshier, Andrew Heaton, Amy Farias, and Katie Giannotti (I don’t know why, but you’re a special one), and my music group for keeping me on my toes.

my doner crew

my office is so milk of magnesia; i need something to look at.  who else then all the people i've ever had the honor of working on assignments with.  in order of left to right: rob dey (although we didn't work on anything together), jim ward, luke socolewicz, alex drukas (otherwise known as "mexican line drawing), and travis brevard [also known as (kno)bot].

in the making....

i'm gonna represent hard with this year's holiday mix cd.

-- sonnyrojo!

i want it to:

1 be tasty
2 span a wide range of genres that i listen to
3 no expected indie stuff
4 make it truly represent the music i'm listening to right now
5 not use songs that i've already used
6 try not to put people off on electro
7 have people listen to one random one minute and listening to a crazy ass opposite random song the next (without them noticing)

album cover and link to come

big l, rest in peace

i still listen to a lot of 90s underground hip hop  last week, i walked into my michigan suburban gym and had big l playing on my ipod.  as i swung the door open, i was greeted by the usual scents and sights and what not...and i thought to myself,

"i bet i'm the only one in here listening to big l."

Thanksgiving in Denver

so you know, i don't like to show pictures that will blatantly exploit anyone in any way.  you know, that's just my steez.  either way, i feel like i do have a story to tell..so here they are:

1) fuck! it felt great to see mountains.  michigan is flat as shit -- that's been steamrolled and ironed.

2) it was cold as fuck; and i think it's cool you're taking your kid out for an evening ride.  but it's cold as fuck, dude.

3) my fam eats off of styrofoam plates.  no joke.  my mom has enough dishes to do after cooking all that food.

4) black labs

5) we ate at the oldest restaurant in colorado.  i had the buffalo prime rib.

6) got breakfast burritos here.  sadly, they weren't tasty at all.  and they were expensive.  $5.89 for one.

7) the sun rising en route to the airport -- accompanied by two of my closest friends.
